RESEARCHERS WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH A PSYCHOPATH

Posted on LOVE Fraud November 2 for anyone who might be interested in participating in a study to learn more about the victims of Psychopaths so they can learn more about how and why they choose the ones they choose. The survey runs from now until December 31, 2008

Plenty of scientific researchers have studied psychopaths. But few have studied the victims of psychopaths, so there is little documentation of what we have all been through.

Perhaps that is beginning to change.

Lovefraud has been contacted by a researcher from Carleton University in Ottowa, Ontario, Canada. She is conducting a study entitled Victimization, coping, and social support of adult survivors of psychopaths. The graduate student is working under the supervision of Dr. Adelle Forth, who is a colleague of Dr. Robert Hare.

The purpose of the study is “to gain an understanding of the victimization experiences of adult (18+) survivors of psychopaths, in an attempt to raise awareness amongst the general public, and mental health and criminal justice professionals.”

Everyone at Lovefraud is invited to participate.

The researcher has developed a web-based survey. The survey has both self-report scales and open-ended questions. You will be asked to rate the presence or absence of psychopathic traits of the most recent psychopathic individual you have been involved with on one scale. Questions revolve around demographics, your relationship and experiences with the psychopath, including being deceived and its impact on your mental and physical health, your ways of coping, and your support networks. The survey does not ask for any information that might identify you.

Completing the survey will take approximately one hour, and Lovefraud strongly encourages you to participate. If you are concerned about your safety, please be sure to take appropriate precautions.

Here—finally—is a chance to develop information that may make a difference in how victims of psychopaths are viewed and treated. Let’s take advantage of the opportunity.

What do all Sociopaths have in common?

In an article on Lovefraud this morning Steve Becker explained in his words what he feels ALL sociopaths have in common. From my experiences I would agree with what he has to say. If anyone has anything they would like to add please feel free to do so.

According to Steve these are the traits that they all share. They are emotionally shallow, they lack loyalty, remorse, compassion, and shame, while they are audacious, liars and deceivers.

To often the Abuser gets custody of the abused in the courts. This is so common the courts should know this. The courts need to listen to the children. It is NOT ONLY FATHERS who do this Narcissistic Mothers use the children as well.

It may be hard to believe an abusive partner can ever make good on his threat to take the children away from his victim. After all, he has a history of violent behavior and she almost never does. Unfortunately, a surprising number of battered women lose custody of their children. The actual number is not known and offenders appear to be no more successful in gaining custody than non-offenders (Liss & Stahly, 1993). However, violence against one parent by another is often considered in custody-determination proceedings (Family Violence Project, 1995). I found this site to be a great resource.  Linda Martinez-Lewi Ph.D. and author of the book Freeing Yourself from the Narcissist in Your Life. Has put together a great blog explaining the Narcissist and things you can do to deal with the Narcissist in your life or some one you know.

This article is a perfect example of what goes on inside the head of someone who has been in a relationship with a sociopath once the relationship is over. The mind can be our worse enemy if we don’t take control of our thoughts. I found this particular post to be a perfect example of what effort has to be put into taking back control. No contact in the physical sense is the only way of getting free that’s the easy part. Getting him/her out of your thoughts that is the hardest part of all.

Good information on bullying from the U of Michigan Health Systems

Bullying is not going away but in fact getting worse. As time goes on we are realizing the devastating effects of bullying today. With the new technologies available to us today it has created easier access to targets and the ability to be anonymous making bullying a deadly crime. Suicides are on the rise and parents and families are devastated. The University of Michigan has some good information and resources listed under its Health Topics and it is a good resource.

Bullying is not just a childhood problem. School Bullies grow to be workplace Bullies, Corporate Bullies, Professional Bullies of all sorts, but the child victims are effected throughout their adult lives as well. Parents please do not take this subject lightly. If your child is being bullied at school please listen to your child and help and support him/her. Please take immediate action, your child can’t do it alone.

The Institute’s Next Writing Project

We are currently researching about the effects of pathologicals on their children. This includes Parental Alientation Syndrome and other negative effects that pathology has on young developing children.

We will begin working on this in January so we need as many of you as possible who are co-parenting or a better description of it is ‘parallel parenting’ to take our survey so we have plenty of info to write from.
